Kenneth Hanson
Kenneth Hanson began his serious, but part time, pursuit of large format black-and-white photography in 1978 when he acquired a Toyo 4x5 field camera. His interest in landscape photography derived from his boyhood association with the English Lake District. The shore was a few minutes from his home, the Pennine moors were to the east and the horizon was a profile of the Lakeland Mountains.
He has photographed in many locations including New England, the California Sierra, Northern England (the limestone outcrops that are his home territory) and the Himalayas.
His Himalayan visits gave rise to: Himalayan Portfolios; Journeys of the Imagination. This 2009 book includes over 100 duotone black-and-white photographs. They were taken over a 20 year period comprising two journeys to Pakistan, one to India, eight to Nepal and one to Tibet. The photographs are accompanied by maps and an interpretive essay. The book received in 2009 a Benjamin Franklin silver award for design and was a finalist in the Mountain Image category at the Banff Mountain Book Festival. It also received a starred review by the Library Journal (“Highly recommended; awesome images, insightful commentary.”)
The mountains provide a unique experience — call it beauty, joy, terror, awe — that points beyond our reasonable world and takes us to the boundary between life and death. As such they demand our serious attention.
He has spent many years devoted to darkroom printing; however, recent advances in archival digital printing have made it possible for him to reexamine many of his older images and make prints of his work more available.
Hanson moved to the United States in 1958 and prior to his retirement in 1991 he was Senior Biochemist at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station.
